That’s likely underselling the speaker's potential, but unpredictable environments can affect range and there’s little point in promising the moon only to get complaints. Other companies stick with a 30-foot range on the spec sheet and leave it at that, even though they may be running Bluetooth 4.x or 5.x. Some companies list their product’s longest possible range, usually outdoors and in an unobstructed line-of-sight test environment. If you're out and about, you'll want to remember to turn these speakers off manually when not in use to maximize battery life. Unlike normal Bluetooth speakers that go to sleep after a short period without use, these will usually stay awake (to listen for your commands) and slowly run down the battery. Luckily, some manufacturers also list the expected hours of battery life when used at full volume and that transparency is appreciated.Īdditionally, if your Bluetooth speaker also happens to have WiFi connectivity, they're usually designed for always-on functionality. If you like your tunes loud, it can often end up cutting the expected usage time in half or more. This usually means they tested at a low to mid volume. That said, be careful when looking at battery specs, as they frequently list a maximum runtime (“up to” x amount of hours). These days, around 12 hours of runtime seems to be the baseline but obviously, the more battery life you can get out of a speaker, the better. The focus of this guide is on portable Bluetooth speakers, and while “portable” can be a relative term, these devices are generally for people who are likely to find themselves far from a power outlet. It may be worth splurging on a better sounding model with a lower IP rating if you’ll mostly be using it indoors, for instance. If you plan on using the ports, that may limit the product's rated ability to fend off the elements.Ĭonsider the IP rating and also how you plan to use your Bluetooth speaker when making your decision. They’re also good options for the beach, playground and other rough environs.Īdditionally, speakers with ports and a high rating will often include a tight-fitting cover over the charging or auxiliary ports. These are safe for quick dunks in the pool or tub and should be more than OK in the rain or in the shower. IP67 is a common rating these days indicating highly resistant and potentially rugged speakers. ![]() If it’s waterproof, it may have some innate resistance to solids, but there’s no guarantee. When an X is used instead of a number, that means the product wasn’t tested for resistance. The waterproof rating goes from 0 (no protection) to 9 (protected against immersion and high pressure jets). The former goes from 0 (no protection) to 6 (dust tight). It’s usually a combo of two numbers with the first indicating solid object ingress and the second being water. IP ratings (Ingress Protection) are the alphanumeric indicators you often see in a product’s spec sheet that define the tested resistance of a product to both solid objects (dirt, dust, fingers?) and water. There were bumps and setbacks in the first year, but such was expected from a new company. Three months later, doors opened to the first two students. In July of 2008, Monica left her position at NBA to build Jigsaw. With ideas on hand and much enthusiasm, Monica is excited to guide and direct the vision of Jigsaw Junction. Her time at NBA provided experience for navigating the educational system in Washington State. At NBA, Monica coordinated home therapy programs, directed monthly team meetings, trained tutors, wrote treatment plans, proposed IEP goals, attended IEP meetings, and conducted workshops. Monica returned to the States in 2005 and honed her skills as a Program Manager at Northwest Behavioral Associates (NBA). She took the steps that would bring her closer to Jigsaw Junction. Nevertheless, the experience she gained in Hong Kong proved to be invaluable foundation for what she is trying to build today. The work was challenging, and the hours were long. She also assessed all incoming students and created individualized intervention programs. In addition to managing the classroom, Monica hired, trained, and supervised all school staff. Here, she helped start the first ABA school in Asia. Never content to rest, Monica also worked on the weekends providing one-on-one home therapy services to children in Manhattan through YAI, a local non-profit agency.įollowing graduation, Monica worked abroad in Hong Kong. The analysis and application of verbal behavior became an everyday phenomenon. It was at the Keller School that theory met application. While at Columbia University, Monica taught at the renowned Fred S. Upon gaining acceptance to one of the nation's leading Behavior Analysis programs, Monica studied under the tutelage of R. Monica inevitably continued her post-graduate studies in the field of Behavior Analysis. It was love at first sight: The relationships with families were irreplaceable, and the science of behavior analysis fascinated Monica, leaving her eager to learn more about this field. With some luck, Monica landed her first job working with several families on the Eastside. Inspired by the knowledgeable staff and mentors, Monica applied to become a home therapy tutor. This was where Monica began learning the basics of classroom management. While attending the University of Washington, she volunteered at the Experimental Education Unit (EEU). Of fruit and spiceĬlaire Clark recipe carrot cake. In her recipe, taken from the book Cakes originally published in 1980, Holt also flouts convention with melted butter, rather than the customary oil – butter, of course, was the enemy back then, but I love the rich flavour it gives her gorgeously fluffy cake. To this end, I'm also going to use Geraldine Holt's light muscovado sugar, rather than the white sugar called for by most other recipes: Delia's dark muscovado is too aggressively treacly a flavour for my taste, but the slightly toffee-ish taste of the unrefined sugar is pleasingly raw. Like a good muesli, I think carrot cake should require a bit of effort in the dental department – a felicitous combination of afternoon tea and workout, so mine will be of the chewier variety. I quite like the effect – although their cakes aren't as light as those made with white flour, it gives them a coarse, defiantly wholesome texture which works well with the strands of carrot. Photograph: Felicity Cloakeīack when it was the preserve of the Tom and Barbaras of this world, carrot cake was customarily made even more beardy with wholemeal flour, an approach still favoured by Claire Clark and Delia. The delicate sponge is a great showcase for the distinctive sweetness of the carrots, but it's overwhelmed by the heavy cream cheese icing – I think this would make a lovely fairy cake, or madeleine-style nibble, but it's too refined and subtle to qualify as a carrot cake. The whole mixture is as light as a cloud – even the carrots are finely shredded, rather than simply grated, and the flour is extra-fine – making for another very different carrot cake experience. Jane Grigson's recipe is also unusual: a fatless génoise reliant for volume on whisked egg whites rather than any raising agent. (Given it's gluten and lactose-free, I suspect I may find myself making this one again for the digestively-challenged man in my life.) I love it, but I don't think it will chime with many people's idea of a perfect carrot cake, regretfully. As she admits, it's "not much to look at" – a golden disc about half the height of one layer of an ordinary cake – but it's incredibly moist and deliciously nutty, with a lovely citrus kick too. Nigella supplies a recipe originating from Venetian Jews which sounds refreshingly medieval, made as it is from ground almonds, rather than flour, enriched with eggs and olive oil and studded with booze-soaked sultanas and toasted pine nuts. Not all carrot cakes are supersized, American-style. I was beyond excited to see some works by Piet Mondrian. It was a really great way to start our visit and we developed a much clearer idea of where to go next. These are just two of the many artworks mentioned on the tour. It is quite a sad painting as Picasso never saw his two friends again. Picasso is the jester, a friend who died of the Spanish Flu is in the middle, and the monk is a friend who converted to Catholicism and entered a monastery. One was that the painting is actually an autobiography. While the artwork label is incredibly minimal, we heard some great stories from our guide. It felt as though you were inside a museum inside a gallery so ultimate level of inception.Īnother highlight of the highlight tour was seeing the Three Musicians by Picasso. There was a complete Japanese Tea House reconstructed on the second floor. We were amazed on the tour by the number of architectural elements and objects inside the gallery. Five clawed dragons surround the top of the cage and there is rare white jade everywhere. The workmanship on the cage is unbelievably intricate. When not going for walks, the dog was able to relax on a silk pillow and be fed delicacies. Imagine seeing a cute little puppy being treated like an Emperor. According to the label, it represents the luxury of the Chinese Court. It is from the Qing Dynasty and is believed to have been made around the late 18th century. My favourite object was this dog cage from China. We started in the American Art wing and moved through Asia and Europe. I would so highly recommend doing this to orientate yourself and get a taste of what’s on offer. On arrival at the museum we decided to join a collections highlight tour. Basically, if you want to visit a gallery that has a bit of literally everything, then this is the one to add to your list. I had been warned that this is a huge gallery filled with everything from 15th century European art to Picasso and Mondrian. You could so easily spend an entire day here and not come close to seeing everything.
